What to write in a new baby card
Congratulate the parents, welcome the baby, and add one warm wish. "Congratulations on your beautiful new baby. We are so happy for all of you" is right for almost anyone, and two or three sentences are plenty. Tired new parents want to feel celebrated, not to read a speech.
This guide is built so you can pick a line, change a word or two, and sign your name. If you want quick options first, start with the five below.

How to write a new baby card
A good baby card does three things: it congratulates, it names the baby if you know the name, and it wishes something small and real, such as rest, laughter or good days ahead. That is all it needs.
Keep the tone matched to your relationship. A close friend can be playful. A coworker or neighbor does best with warm and brief. Grandparents and relatives can say more about love and family.
Write to the parents as people, not only as "mom and dad." Naming both of them, or using their names, makes even a short card feel personal.
If you don't know the baby's name
You don't need it. "Welcome, little one" and "Congratulations on your new arrival" work whether the baby is a newborn, adopted, or arrived through surrogacy, and they never guess wrong about a name or gender.

If the baby arrived after a hard road

Some parents wait a long time for a baby, or the birth was difficult. Do not describe it. Say only what is true and kind:
We are so glad this little one is here. Thinking of all of you.
However it happened, you did it. Welcome to the world, baby.
Skip anything about how long they tried, or how "it was meant to be."
What not to write in a new baby card
- Comparisons to a parent“He looks just like his dad” is a coin flip. Skip it.
- Birth detailsLeave questions about labor or weight out of the card.
- Sleep warnings“Sleep now while you can” is a well-worn joke that tired parents have heard many times.
- Advice nobody asked forFeeding, schedules and sleep methods can wait until you are asked.
- Guessing at gender or nameIf you are not sure, welcome the baby without either.
Common questions
What do you write in a new baby card?
Congratulate the parents, welcome the baby by name if you know it, and add one warm wish. Two or three sentences is plenty. "Congratulations on your new baby. We are so happy for all of you" is right for almost anyone.
What do you write in a baby card for a coworker?
Keep it warm and brief: congratulations, a wish for rest and joy, and a line that work is covered. Skip advice and questions about the birth.
Should I mention the baby's name if I don't know it?
No. "Welcome to the world, little one" or "Congratulations on your new arrival" works when you are unsure of the name or gender.
Is it okay to send a baby card late?
Yes. Parents of a newborn rarely keep score, and a belated card is still welcome. Try: "I'm late, but my wishes are not. Congratulations."
What should I not write in a new baby card?
Avoid comparing the baby's looks to a parent, asking about birth details, warning about sleep, and giving advice nobody asked for.
Before you send it
- Sign with the names of everyone it is from, so the parents can thank the right people.
- Handwrite at least your name. A printed card with a handwritten line feels personal.
- If you can, mention one specific offer, such as "I'll drop off dinner next week," and then do it.
Add a small gift without adding pressure
A card is enough. If you want to add something, think about what helps new parents most: food they don't have to cook, something for the baby's keepsakes, or help with the rest of the household.
